Official: Russia, Iran can discuss construction of another nuke

MOSCOW, Oct 30 (PRIME) -- Russia and Iran can discuss construction of one more nuclear power plant with Russian technologies, Chairman of the Russia-Iran Business Council Vladimir Obydenov told PRIME in an interview released on Monday.

CEO of nuclear power corporation Rosatom Alexei Likhachyov said earlier he will visit Iran to hold negotiations with the vice president of Iran to extend cooperation in late October.

“(During the negotiations) the subject of the existing electric power plant in Bushehr will be priority, and a further extension of cooperation in peaceful nuclear power,” Obydenov said. “Works to build the second stage of the nuclear power plant in Bushehr are going on. So, it is not ruled out that crucial decisions on the possibility to build another nuclear power plant in Iran can be made during the negotiations.”

President Vladimir Putin will visit Iran on Wednesday for negotiations with the Azeri and Iranian counterparts.

Obydenov said that Russia and Iran can complete negotiations on establishment of a free-trade zone in a foreseeable future but “each side has difficult issues on which it is unable to refrain from the earlier positions.”

Russian companies and regions are interested in participation in the North–South transport corridor uniting railways of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, Obydenov said.

Russia and Iran are discussing establishment of a joint venture to produce grain and halal meat, he said, adding that Russian companies hope that Iran will soon lift wheat imports restrictions.
